Using your business name when commenting

Friday, February 29th, 2008 | General |

I’ve been trying to help Malin decreasing the amount of spam she receives at her website, and it turns out to be a little bit harder then I originally thought.

The problem isn’t so much that she actually receives spam, we all do that and we all have our techniques in preventing it from entering our website, the problem is “real people” leaving “legit” comments, but signs it with their business name and links to their webshop or whatever.

In my mind, this does not qualify as a legit comment. Whenever I leave a comment somewhere I 1) Do not name myself after a chair. and 2) Do not leave a referral link behind. If the person who comments is more interested in making sure his link and name is correct rather then posting a fulfilling comment, then you’re ass is right in the spamfilter as far as I’m concerned.

However, some comments are somewhat valued by these “business commenters” more then others and that’s when you ask yourself; What do I do?

Personally, I’ve removed all suspicious linking I didn’t like right there and then. And whatever additional comments made by the same person which just seemed like a lazy attempt to make sure you had enough linkbacks to get noticed.

But this is of course very individual.

Malin blogs about things she is paid to blog about, incorporating referral links into her blog posts, one could argue that she should therefore permit people to comment with whatever name and link they wanted.

DING! Wrong Answer!

If the advertisement posted by third party individual is not desired, away it goes. It does not file under “altering comments” as you’re merely removing a insignificant link with no relevance to the words they have written. Which was the concern of some last debated. The concern was that if you altered the comment made by someone else, then you were tampering with their ownership of those words. The keywords being “their words” not their damn referral links.

Even though I have google ads and the occasional text link scattered here and there, a comment from “Home Depot” with referral link will never pass moderation on this website. I might change your name to “Anonymous” and remove your link, but by doing so, I do not violate any laws. I remove the unwated spam.

    You obviously feel very strongly about spam comments, so I don’t get why you left three nonsense comments on my blog :S

    I know who that is. Don’t worry, I’ll be getting a court order shortly.

    Eh? People naming themselves after a chair??? o_O;;;

    I think that ‘altering comment violation’ is a bit ridiculous. =/ After all, they are commenting on someone else’s website–on someone else’s property. Of course if someone doesn’t see something they like, on their site, they’re going to mess around with it. People take just as much “risk” at posting comments on the blog, as someone does with accepting comments.

    (shrugs) But that’s only what I think. ;P

    Boo! And I was about to post a very subtle comment linking to my affiliate URL. LOL :D

    Well, I don’t really know how those pay per blog work but I say, it’s your blog, you have the right to remove comments simply because you didn’t like it. No explanations needed.

    By the way, I’m sure you already know this but part of the title of your entry is overlapping with the date.
