That is a very good question that not many think about. Let me give you and idea of a great commenting strategy!
What is the purpose of blog comments?
As I see it there are three goals:
1. Get attention from the blogger
2. Contribute to the topic/discussion
3. Creating backlinks
Number one and two are pretty obvious to me. You want to get noticed, but you don’t want to be remembered for spamming or comments like “Nice site”. That’s why it is important to try to contribute with something.
Creating backlinks
What URL do you type in the comment form? Let me guess: The URL to your main page, example: http://mydomain.com. Am I right? Sure I am!
However, you should really consider deep linking individual posts instead! This can be good for several reasons:
1. The link growth inside your blog will increase since the homepage usually gets all the attention anyway.
2. More pages will have the chance to get some PR ranking.
3. If individual posts get more strength they will rank higher in the SERPs.
4. When choosing an individual post, choose one that is related to the post you are commenting on. Then when visitors/the blog owner clicks your link and gets to your related post will increase your chances to have another regular reader!
If the blog uses the Comment Luv plugin, the job will be done for you. Then you only need to enter the homepage URL and the plugin will leave your latest post title and link with your comment.
I have used this strategy many times when I have a related post to put in the comments. I gained more visitors and even more comments to my own post.
Perhaps it’s time for you to change your blog commenting strategy as well?
