I deleted my username

Magdeline has decided to give away DDG as she no longer has any interest or motivation left to keep it alive. She’s owned the place for over 7 years and I guess after a while you get a bit tired of constantly having to update and secure something so large and massive. DDG has been given to one of the moderators. Basically, because he’s the only one who wanted it.

I considered it for a split second before saying “No Thanks”. I don’t think I can handle the constant frustration of annoying amateurs being cranky because their design got rejected or the constant need to hire in programmers in order to keep it safe. Or any other worst-case-scenarios you can imagine. I’ve got enough with my fulltime job, my blogs and “Norway’s Largest Shop for Catowners Online”, thank you.

As much as I would like to delude myself, I don’t think DDG is going to survive much longer. The boards themselves has been very inactive for a long time and design submissions has decreased. The change of ownership rarely proves itself to work out in the long run as I’ve seen quite a few websites being sold off and then quietly die. Yoursite.nu anyone?

But it’s also the person of the new ownership which makes me believe it won’t survive long. Or undergo constant “BRB” messages on the front page until finally settling on something ridiculous. Now would be a good example… The only thing you see, is a “BRB” page on the front telling you it’s going to be down for 14 days. I’ve been a member of DDG for a very long time. I was a Forum Moderator and then later Forum Administrator. I spent a lot of time there telling dumbasses to shut up. And throughout those years, I’ve never seen a “Back in 2 weeks” message there. Absolutely ridiculous.

You don’t remove the entire website to reconstruct on the actual server! You construct it at a test site and then move it so that there’s a minimum downtime of maybe an hour or so!

Working Online 101: Don’t “BRB” for anything longer then 24 hours!

If you do, there’s no end to what you’ll lose.

You’ll lose ranking on Google, MSN, Yahoo, Altavista and pretty much any other major search engine I can think of. You’ll lose income through whatever Adsense and Adverts you’ve had online. You’ll have a downfall in your pagerank which will take you another 3 months to build up again, which again will decrease your income through whatever Adsense and Adverts you had going on in the first place.

In short. “BRB” pages doesn’t belong online unless you’re moving from a server to another, and even then.. don’t.

Where was I? … Oh, right.

The reason I think the “BRB” pages is a new constant coming is because it’s been taken over by a person who has no stamina. By that, I mean he hasn’t a single site which he created in whatever year prior to 2006 which he still has online and maintains. Which I should know, I sold him a domain once and he only kept it for the remaining months, and even that was “BRB” half the time. Of course, it may be a thing of the past… buuuuut, I don’t think so. If you can’t be bothered sticking with something for more then 6 months before changing your mind and deleting it, then why on earth take over such a large and massive project such as DDG?

I know why. We’ve noticed for a long time now.

Illusion of power and popularity. You crave it, don’t you?

We noticed for a very long time ago his craving personality and how he would frequently AIM Magdeline and ask about progress when the new backend was to be created. No.. actually, more or less demand progress. It cranked her up to no end. But Magdeline is also the kindest person I know, she’d wait for Hell to freeze over before saying anything.

I, however, don’t have that problem.

We also didn’t like it very much when you went in on the forum and altered the Forum Rules without giving us any information or heads up. Not that it was in your place to change the Forum Rules. Your job then was to moderate 2 forums and leave the rest to us. And here you were.. overstepping it… again.

So I deleted my username at the Boards. I see no need for my presence, nor do I desire to be present. I don’t think it’ll survive for very long either anyway.

I feel pretty much the same way. I don’t plan on staying on as a board mod or even responding to anything from the new owner. I stayed around to watch those two forums because I volunteered to do so to Snow. I no longer feel inclined. On top of that, I was very annoyed while I was modding the Request forum to see things done by the others stepping out of line.
Regardless, I agree that DDG is now spiraling down the drain. I’m sad that all Snow’s hard work for all these years is going to die, but if she’s done with it… I hope she does well not having to worry about it anymore. :]

I haven’t been to DDG for a while and woah, it’s a bit of a shock that it’s being given away! I know that it’s died down over the years but I always had expected it to be around… oh well. I still remembered when it was on ezboard, when it was really popular and the decline.

*goes to investigate who the new owner is*

Hrm. I’ve never heard of him before. =/

*sigh* It’s really sad to see a site that has been around for so long die an awful death at the hands of, well, epic fail. Sorry ’bout that, Maja. If you need squishy hugs to cushion the blow of this failure, you know you’ve got a lesb… er… friend in me. *wink*

Belinda – Actually. you have. But like anything else, he constantly changes his alias. I don’t even know what it was in the very beginning.

Wow, I had a username on the DDG forum for a while.. I don’t even know if that’s still active or not. It’s one of the very original sites I know from my Neopets days (*gag*) though, so if it does fail as you predict (and I’m sure you’re right) it’ll be a shame. :(

So that’s why I saw you were a “Guest” in the board on your previous posts.

Oh, well. Whatever happens, good luck to the new DDG.

And, ONCE AGAIN, it is proven that we think the same thoughts.
