Thankfully I’m one of those people with cable tv. The other day I was watching National Geographics with a show questioning the possibility of twins being able to communicate telepathically. It’s an interesting theory which has been a bit of a urban legend throughout the years. Can identical twins really communicate through telepathy?

Several pairs of identical twins were interviewed in during this show. Several twins would confess into finding themselves in an accident of some sort where they had been injured where the twin said “I wasn’t anywhere near her, but I could feel her pain”.

One example is an identical twin pair of two 9 year old boys. 3 days after arriving home from the hospital (after being born) the mother tells a startling story of how she was feeding the babies, where one son suddenly starts to scream at the top of his lungs for no apparent reason. As she is unable to find the reason as to why he is screaming until his face turns blue she turns to see what is going on with her other son. Evidently, the second son had managed to roll over and almost suffocate being mashed up against a few pillows. After a quick mouth-to-mouth session and a short trip to the hospital to see if everything was all right, he was perfectly fine again and the first son had stopped trying to turn blue.

She then continues to tell a story of how one son had serious pain in his knee, and it turns out to be the second son that has the knee infection. In this case I would like to mention that the sons are 5-6 years of age and are fully capable of communicating with each other on a “normal” level. I don’t know how many time I’ve told Marius; “I don’t feel so good today” and the end result is that he gets sick as well in a form of sympathy pain. It is also said that couples in close relationships will both become ill with morningsickness during pregnancy of the woman. Because they’re just “connected” like that. No form of telepathy, they’re just in a close and intimate relationship with each other. Perhaps scientists are too eager to find results of additional “gifts” amongst people? I can admit it would be far more interesting to believe it was possible for twins to communicate telepathically, then it is to say “they’re just very close”.

And the show continues with twins telling stories of near-death accidents and the second twin describing the pain and anxiety they had felt the -exact same time-.

The only conclusion I was able to come with, however, is that twins has the WORST LUCK EVER.

Finding twins in itself is difficult enough. They don’t exactly grow on trees. But to find 20 pairs of twins who has all had near-death or serious accidents in one way or another with the other twin picking up on it?

Telepathy? Maybe not. Disturbingly bad luck? Definitely!

I don’t know, but I have seen it in action. They have something between them. I am not sure that it is actually telepathy but they do seem to know what the other is feeling or thinking sometimes. I am a partial twin (my twin died in womb) and sometimes I feel like there is a part of me missing ;) But then again I a considered to be weird also. I have two sets of twins as friends and it will drive you insane to watch them. It is almost like they can have a conversation without talking.

Marius and his sister are the same way. They are in no way twins, but I find it tremendously difficult to participate in any conversation between the two because they know each other so well making the conversation a mystery in itself.

Marius has actually said the same thing about my sister and myself. And we’re 4 years a part and not particularly good friends. But since we’ve grown up together, our level of communication is more based on the fact that we know how each others minds work and what will be said. Well, most of time :P

That’s quite interesting — some of my and my twin sister’s friends would bother us on the “telepathy wonder” too. My sister and me are only fraternal twins, but people still ask. I think it’s quite funny hearing people ask me that, actually. “Can you guys communicate telepathically?” “I heard twins can feel each other’s…pain….”

My sister and me just look at them weird and reply with our usual ‘no.’ ;D Sometimes I joke with my friends that, hey, if my sister and me could communicate telepathically, then I’d be doing a hell lot better in school than I am now. XD
