The Designercat

This very beautiful animal is a mix between Serval, Asian Leopard and housecat. It’s “race” has been named Ashera and is said to cost over 22 000 US Dollars should you want one.

It’s evidently; “a very intelligent loving cat with a good temper, twice the size of a normal cat, meant for indoor keeping.
It likes children, other animals and, unlike average cats, doesn’t mind being walking on a leach.”

But here’s my question. This animal is crossed with Serval and Asian Leopard, two of the most successful and active killers of the roaming wild cats. What kind of parents would let this animal into their homes with their children?

Just looking at it you can see it’s a predator with a big P. It’s gorgeous, but so is a Lion. And a Lion isn’t something you bring into the house unless it’s dead and mounted on the wall.

Does cat breeders REALLY need to stop playing God? Yes, please.

This might sound slightly odd… but I’ve always wanted a white tiger. They’re my favourite animal. That doesn’t mean I’d actually get one though. This reminds me of those who play with lions; how can they feel safe when at any moment they can bite of their head?

Exactly, there is no long term experience with this animal, how can you possibly be sure you’ve managed to breed out it’s aggressive behaviour?

white tigers ARE beautiful thought, preferably seen on television of course ;)

The neck actually looks abnormally long. And how exactly would one go about breeding a housecat and a leopard? Anatomically speaking, surely it wouldn’t fit!

    Artificial Insemination =)

I have to say, it’s a beautiful cat. But then, like you said, so are lions and I wouldn’t snuggle one of those.

Though I would love to have a snow leopard as a pet, I can not agree with having any wild animal as a pet. Nor could I agree with breeding any wild animal with a domesticated animal. People need to remember that domesticated animals have had their “wildness” bred out of them for hundreds of years. Where as (for example) Serval & Asian Leopard have not. All it is going to take is one child to run around in front of it & it’s natural instincts to take over & it will hunt the child. Then we will blame the animal when it is just doing what comes natural to it. Which to me makes us the killers of the child not the animal.

It’s a beautiful cat. I’ve been around big cats before, including the aforementioned ‘white tigers’. I got to visit the ones Sigfreid and Roy keep at their home in Vegas. They’re quite exceptional - but with any wild animal, you never know. I knew another couple there who owned a Puma as well - used to take it for walks in the park… in the middle of the day. (And sadly, Im not making this up)

In all reality, people who are actually able to -afford- one should have the common sense to not bring it around normal people and their babies :P And since we all know most rich people really don’t have that common sense gland - the darn breeders should acquire one and either A) not breed them or B) Give them to people who know what the hell they’re doing -_-

Wow, where did you find that article? You know, the sad thing about it is once it’s predatory instincts start kicking in, the poor cat gets labeled as vicious and is put to sleep. So easy to blame it on an animal which wasn’t supposed to exist in the first place!

It’s a damn fine cat (except for that long neck) but like you said, it’s stil a wild animal…

Went to the site, they’re developing a “designer dog” as well. Fortunately, the designer dog will be small… so no chance of them interbreeding wild wolves with dogs to create the “perfect pet”.

The comments to this thread are INCREDIBLY well thought out and posted. I only wish everyone had the presence of mind to ask the questions being asked here.
